Metal detectors and separators use phase angle technology to detect and reject contaminants of all metal groups (ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steels). These can be utilised in gravity pipes, pneumatic conveying lines, pumped liquid lines and product conveyors. As well as being utilised in food processing facilities, these metal detectors and separators are found in pharmaceutical plants, plastics and recycling industries, chemical plants and other process industries.

There are several key factors to ensure you select the right magnetic separator for your application. The type of metal contamination you are dealing with, be it primary contamination (large tramp metal like nuts, bolts, screws) or secondary contamination (fine particles such as stainless steel from equipment wear).

Understand how your product moves through the process, gravity free-fall, pneumatic conveying, mechanical conveyor, or pressure pipeline feed. Consider the volume of product passing through the process, usually measured in cubic metres per hour, as this affects the separator’s size and design.

Decide whether you need automatic cleaning units for continuous 24/7 operation or manual cleaning units for processes that allow stoppages. You must also consider that dry free-flowing goods behave differently to wet viscous solutions, or damp products that tend to bridge cluster or cake.

Depending on the stage in the process various units can be employed in the processing of malt. Early in the process and in particular for the removal of larger tramp metal contamination; chute magnets can be utilised. Further towards point of use, magnets more suitable for the attraction of fines can be utilised, such as magnetic grids and grates.

A variety of magnetic separators can be utilised, the choice of unit greatly depends on the application, for example for the removal of tramp metals (larger contaminants) magnets such as overband, drums, head rollers and plate magnets can be used.  For removal of smaller contaminants Pneumag’s, magnetic grids, Rotagrids and other secondary style magnets are the best choice.  All of these separators help maintain material integrity, protect extrusion and moulding equipment, and improve the quality of finished products.
